Red Box is an exhibition centre in Nanjing designed by Mix Architecture. Located at the foot of Red Mountain, the monolithic building takes its name and colour from the area's iron oxide-rich soil and the surrounding historic red-brick industrial buildings. Formed from board-marked red concrete, the structure is conceived as a single carved volume, with angular cut-outs and courtyards breaking its mass and defining its circulation.
An angled void marks the main entrance, where a circular roof opening brings daylight into the arrival space above a patterned timber door. The red concrete continues uninterrupted from the exterior into the interior, reinforcing the impression of a solid, sculpted form. The ground floor is organised around an exhibition hall and lobby, alongside a reception area, service spaces, storage and bathrooms.
Openings surrounding the exhibition hall extend the exhibition route towards a courtyard and water feature connected by a path of red paving. These outdoor spaces introduce natural light and moments of pause within the otherwise enclosed composition.
The upper floor provides two additional exhibition rooms linked by an external timber deck terrace. Brick-sized perforations across the façade filter daylight into the galleries while allowing the building to glow from within after dark, adding another layer to the project's material expression.
