Basalt House is the renovation and extension of a Victorian terrace in north-west London by EBBA Architects. The project combines the existing character of the house with a series of contemporary interventions, continuing the studio’s focus on materiality, craftsmanship and the relationship between old and new.
The transformation introduces a rear extension built from richly textured basalt stone alongside a loft conversion defined by an organically shaped skylight. Together, these additions bring natural light deep into the house, allowing daylight to filter from the loft through the centre of the interior and connect each level.
At the rear of the house, the basalt extension establishes a new material identity while remaining in dialogue with the original Victorian structure. The stone introduces texture and depth, giving the addition a solid yet understated presence.
An exposed steel lintel complements the basalt, adding a subtle industrial element to the extension. The contrast between the stone’s muted tones and the precise structural lines of the steel creates a calm material palette that integrates the contemporary intervention with the existing house.
